I first crossed swords with Bert Norris in Division Two in the 1989-1990 season, and we have played each other most years ever since. In that first encounter we had two long tough games, which lasted right into July. Such was the nature of Bert's chess. He was a first-class player, and a great competitor. As a member of the C.C.C.C. team, in the years when we used to enter the Club Championship, he was always most reliable, with consistently good results. In the final season, when we were in deep trouble against outstanding players from the major national clubs, Bert scored 1.5 points in his two games, and the other nine of us only managed a further two points between us.
But it was on the telephone that the real Bert revealed himself. You sensed his personality, his dedication to his ministry, and you could guess at his inspiring preaching.
Previous to retirement he was based at Kirriemuir in Angus, and then moved to Rothesay on the Isle of Bute. In recent years he suffered increasingly from health problems. At the beginning of October he was admitted to the local hospital in Bute, suffering from a serious heart condition, complicated by diabetes, and also a chest infection. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on 16th October. May he rest in peace.
