British Chess Problem Society

Review by Michael Blake

Chess problem composition and solving have been popular for a very long time. We are fortunate that the British Chess Problem Society has a long history and consequential excellent source of material for chess players. The society was founded in 1918 and is the world's oldest chess problem society. It exists to promote the knowledge and enjoyment of chess compositions, membership is open to chess enthusiasts in all countries.

The Society produces two bi-monthly magazines, The Problemist and The Problemist Supplement (the latter catering for beginners), which are issued to all members. It organises the annual British Chess Solving Championship, and selects the Great Britain squad for the World Chess Solving Championship.

Members are invited to attend BCPS lectures, which are held in London on the last Friday of each month between September and April. The Society holds an annual residential weekend, with a full programme of solving and composing tourneys and lectures. Members are entitled to use the resources of the BCPS library, and the Society book service, which can provide new and second-hand publications.

Topics covered include the popular two movers, three movers and selfmates. A wide range of introductory articles provide excellent advice and direction for newcomers. The site is well maintained and provides a reliable source of quality material and advice.

The opinions above are personal to the author.
