The Secretary Writes ...

1. Volunteers wanted

BFCC is looking for volunteers to fill two important vacancies:

a) Tournament Director for the British Correspondence Chess Championships

The BCCC consists of a Championship section, Candidates and (if the number of entries is sufficient) Reserves. A new tournament is started every autumn. The TD's work involves publicising the tournament, receiving the entries, setting up the sections (seeded) and dealing with any issues that arise during play. There is a BCCC Committee comprising the Tournament Director, BFCC President and Secretary and one other, currently John Allain, which is there to give the TD whatever support is needed.

This post would probably be best suited to someone with some previous experience of running correspondence chess tournaments, although expressions of interest from enthusiastic newcomers to tournament directing would also be welcome. If you are interested, please contact the BFCC Secretary, Duncan Chambers (phone 01235 525991; e-mail secretary@bfcc-online.org.uk), in the first instance.

b) Assistant International Secretary

The main duty of the Assistant International Secretary is to process entries for international (ICCF) tournaments from members of BFCC and its member organizations. There is also the opportunity to become more familiar with and involved in BFCC's work in the international arena. For more information, please contact the International Secretary, Alan Rawlings
(alanjc.rawlings@ntlworld.com) or the Secretary (as above).

2. BFCC Open

The BFCC Open can now offer Preliminary sections with play by e-mail only. Players should state their preference when entering. Entries (£6 per group) to Phill Beckett, Brough House, Retford, Notts. DN22 0NQ.

3. Correspondence team tournaments

Due to a gradual decrease in numbers of players participating in correspondence chess generally, some team tournaments have become less popular in recent years, threatening their viability. BFCC is looking to work with other interested parties to rationalise the structure of team tournaments in order to preserve the long term future of this form of CC play. Watch this space for more details.

Best wishes
Duncan Chambers
(BFCC Secretary
