British Championship Update

In the Championship Gordon Evans and Freddy Bush are early leaders with three draws apiece. Meanwhile in Candidates 'A', Richard Ward takes the lead with three draws also. Early results on the webserver appear to favour these early draws but I will take a look at these and let you know if they represent theory lines/evaluations or titanic tussles. Candidates 'B' was disrupted by the unfortunate withdrawal of Chiedu Maduekwe whilst in the Reserves there is just one result with Sandy Smyth being the winner in his game versus Martin Hardwick. Nothing to report from Candidates 'C' as yet.

The BFCC EC meeting meet soon and one of the items being considered is the amount of leave available within the British Championship. The ICCF Webserver handles leave on a calendar year basis, therefore we have currently set the leave period to 14 days per calendar year. Normally an ICCF event has 30 days per calendar year but the 'British' has an adjudication date and early finsih compared to standard ICCF events. Please let me know if you feel 14 days is or is not sufficient. Special leave remains available at the Tournament Controllers discretion.

Information Circular Proposals for Change

Proposals for November IC

Move to primarily electronic distribution of the IC starting with the February 2008 issue. This would require a one-off communication with members to determine their preference for printed or electronic copies and obtain current e-mail addresses.

Separate the news and information part of the IC from the games section and make the games available to paying subscribers only.

Consider an increased subscription rate for those wishing to receive the IC and games in printed form.

ICCF MONEY PRIZE TOURNAMENTS

The ICCF Money Prize Tournaments is a new tournament format specifically approved at the ICCF 2007 Congress. These are tournament sections run in 9-player sections, server only, played at 10 moves in 30 days with conditional moves available, and entries are continuously accepted. Entry into this tournament may only be made through Direct Entry via the New Events pages at the ICCF server site.

The tournaments are open to all, without rating and membership restriction. Sections will be formed without regard to player ratings but as random as possible given the number of entrants. Sections will be rated and eligible for title norms, subject to the usual ICCF regulations.

The entry fee is CHF 40.00 per player (or the equivalent in other offered currencies (about £17 at todays rate), payable only by Direct Entry. Prizes are paid for 1 st and 2 nd place of CHF 200.00 and CHF 100.00 respectively. Standard tie-breaks (S-B, then Head-to-Head) will be used, and if these do not resolve the tie, the appropriate prize money will be split.

This is the 1st time there has been a triple tie for the title of British Veterans Champion. Terry Taylor's record speaks for itself. Jim Davis has been one of the competitions most loyal supporters and his endeavours have been duly rewarded. It was Stan Grayland's 1st time in the Veterans Championship and in spite of a loss in his 1st game he did not allow this to deter him and powered along with win after win.

Clergy Correspondence Chess Club

The Clergy Correspondence Chess Club was founded in 1967 by Ivor Davies, a clergyman of the Church in Wales. From small beginnings the club has grown over the years to a current membership of over 40. Membership is open to clergy of all Christian churches and past winners have included Roman Catholic, Baptist, Methodist and United Reformed clergy, alongside Anglicans who have historically been the largest denomination represented.

Ken Messer Memorial Tournament

Ken Messere, who our tournament commemorates, was a major figure in British correspondence chess some 35-40 years ago. He was a respected IM in the days when that title really meant a great deal, played in World Championship 5 final, won by Hans Berliner, and was the main author of a fine book of that tournament, but his professional activities took precedence.

For many years Ken lived in Paris, working for OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) at a very senior level, and was an acknowledged world expert on fiscal policy and taxation. Ken died just over two years ago. The tournament is to be played live on the ICCF Webserver.

ICCF Champions League

Season 3 of the ICCF Champions League is planned to start later this year. Entries open May 1 and close August 1. BFCC will be handling entries as usual at a fee of £24.00 per team, and teams entered through us may be multinational indeed a large number are. If you want to know more about this event, please email me. My guess is that once again there will be both server and email sections, but I do wonder how much longer email play will continue as a serious option.

Simon Webb, Correspondence Chess Grandmaster, was born on June 10, 1949. He died on March 14, 2005, aged 55.

Harro Otte, who died in June 2005, was for many years a TD for the European Tournament Office, and in his memory a tournament for national teams is being organised by ICCF-Europa. Each member federation may enter one team of six players, and the tournament will be played on the ICCF server in two stages, Preliminaries and Final. In each section there will be 7 to 9 teams, and players will play one game against each other player on their board. Nothing new here?

Well, teams are rating restricted, based on the current ICCF rating list. Each team must have an average rating of less than 2000, and each team may include not more than two players with ratings over 2000 but no player may be rated above 2051. This is definitely an event for the players ICCF neglects so often the supposedly weaker players.

If you are rated 2051 or below in the current ICCF rating list, or have no ICCF or FIDE rating, and want to be considered for the team please let me know not later than 1.3.2007. Play in the Preliminaries will start 17.6.2007.

The British Correspondence Chess Championship is proceeding well with an early lead being taken by Richard Ward, today Richard records a draw against the current joint-British Champion, Oliver Lightowlers.Â In Candidates 'A', Barry Sheppard and Geoffrey Lloyd also agreed a drawÂ that means Geoffrey has the lead in that section.

The British Championship is led by Freddy Bush with 1/1, it is still early days for this historical event that will be played on the ICCF web-server from 2007-8.
